Object Oriented Modelling and Simulation
of Environmental, Human, and Technical Systems
24th Conference of the Association of SIMULA Users (ASU)
30.9.- 2.10.1998 Salzau (Schleswig Holstein, Northern Germany)
Organizers : Ecology Center, University of Kiel ; Association of SIMULA Users
Registration Form
Background
The ASU is a professional organization concerned with computerized modelling of complex systems as well as the design of computer software using the Object Oriented Programming paradigm. The ASU started in 1974 as a Users Group for the SIMULA programming language. In 1967, the SIMULA standard appeared as the worlds first object oriented programming language, preceded by several years of intense research and development at the Norwegian Computing Center in Oslo. The current modern SIMULA systems provide the user with a powerful and stable system for basic and advanced computerized modelling work. Over the years, the ASU expanded its field of interest to encompass software aids and methodologies for structuring and programming complex system models. The ASU organizes an annual conference, edits a regular Newsletter as a forum for SIMULA users and other OOP-languages and supports developments and events in the various fields of Object Orientation.
The Ecology Center at the University of Kiel started in 1996 as a joint institution of the Faculties of Natural Sciences, Agronomy, and Medicine. It continues field investigations, theoretical and modelling activities of the Project Center for Ecosystem Research, which is funded by the National Ministry of Science and Technology since 1988. The investigations cover a joint effort of data acquisition in different ecosystem types representative for the Northern German landscape, located in the Bornhöved Lakes Region. Besides basic research, there are practical applications in landscape planning, environmental health and nature protection. As one of the largest German ecosystems research initiatives, the project is now in its evaluation phase.

Call for Papers and Invitation to Register
The conference programme will be devoted generally to the theory and application of object oriented modelling. This includes mainly simulation models and particularly the application of SIMULA in all domains. The new developments in SIMULA applications and SIMULA systems are an interesting subject for all, who work in the area of simulation and algorithmic representation of systems. In this conference, there will be a special focus on environmental applications.
The Programme Committee invites persons interested in any of the main topics or related fields to participate. Especially welcome is the submission of conference contributions, which will be published in a conference volume after an evaluation by the programme committee (see Instructions for Authors).
Instructions for Authors
The Conference language is English. A short abstract of approximately 1 page must contain the following information:
Title of the paper, address and eventually e-mail of the author(s), outline of the papers contents as a basis for the programme committee selection
The final paper version of the paper, to be submitted before the conference (30th of July), should be camera ready and not exceed ten pages. Detailed layout instructions will be sent to those who register.

Programming Environments for Modelling·
News on SIMULA and other Object Oriented Languages
Conference Events
The conference will start on the 30th of September at 12.00 o'clock with an opening lunch and will end on the 2nd of October. Besides oral and poster presentations, software and application demonstrations, the conference will provide an opportunity for a meeting of the Simula Development Group and the Annual General meeting of the ASU. A special conference dinner will take place on the 1st of October. The programme will be completed by a joint excursion on the 2nd of October afternoon.
If requested, a special excursion programme for accompanying persons will be offered.
Conference Location
The conference is held at the Federal Cultural Center Salzau, residing in a newly renovated 19th Century castle, which now is open to host a wide variety of cultural events, concerts, conferences and exhibitions, mainly with international participation. Salzau is located between Kiel and Lübeck in the beautiful moraine-formed landscape of Eastern Schleswig-Holstein, famous for its touristic attractivity and its high recreational value.
